By the time I was born in the 1960s, oil, followed by natural gas, had become the mainstay of home heating.
But still a pall of smoke hung over the older houses in Canterbury, where I grew up. I still associate visits to my grandparents in a Nottinghamshire mining town with an acrid smell that pervaded the countryside for miles.
The new SE remains one of the smallest phones (Apple or Android) that you can buy. The glossy glass back and curved sides make the phone feel slippery. The body is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, which means it can survive being submerged under a meter of water for 30 minutes. When filming the review video, I ran it under the faucet a couple of times to remove dust, and the SE still worked without a hitch.

While householders today worry about the environmental damage committed by cars and wood-burning stoves, the air was filthier back in the 1950s, before air-pollution records were kept, tutors for math when London smogs blotted out almost all light.
Kateryna Rashevska, a lawyer from a Ukrainian NGO called Regional Centre for Human Rights, told the briefing they were collecting evidence to build a case that Russian officials deliberately prevented return of the Ukrainian children.
'What I am the most excited for is the training technique, because the way they train is completely different to how football players train. I am really excited to work hard, to challenge myself, and to get out of my comfort zone.
UKRAINE/BELARUS BORDER, April 8 (Reuters) - More than 30 children were reunited with their families in Ukraine this weekend after a long operation to bring them back home from Russia or Russian-occupied Crimea, where they had been taken from areas occupied by Russian forces during the war.
Lvova-Belova said earlier this week that her commission acted on humanitarian grounds to protect the interests of children in an area where military action was taking place and had not moved anyone against their will or that of their parents or legal guardians, whose consent was always sought unless they were missing.
The International Criminal Court last month issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's children's rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, accusing them of abducting children from Ukraine.
"Now the fifth rescue mission is nearing its completion. It was special regarding the number of children we managed to return and also because of its complexity," said Mykola Kuleba, the founder of the Save Ukraine humanitarian organisation that helped arrange the rescue mission.

The three said they had been separated from their parents who were pressured by Russian authorities to send their children to Russian summer camps for what was billed as two weeks, from occupied parts of Kherson and Kharkiv regions.
It comes after Russia used its latest hypersonic missile - known as the Kinzhal - for the first time during its attack on Ukraine, a military spokesman said today, reportedly wiping out an underground warehouse storing Ukrainian missiles and ammunition in the western Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Moscow has not concealed a programme under which it has taken thousands of Ukrainian children from occupied areas, but presents this it as a humanitarian campaign to protect orphans and children abandoned in the conflict zone.
Climate change forced former supporters of the industry into a rapid about-turn, to the point that some now see coal-mining as a crime against humanity, rather than the beating heart of the working class.
Meanwhile, online programs to help with reading it also emerged Saturday that corpses of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine are being moved from Belarus back to Russia by train and planes in the dead of night to avoid attracting attention.
At that time, five-sixths of the world's coal was mined and used in Britain. At the industry's peak in 1913, there were 3,024 deep mines in operation which produced 292 million tons of coal and employed 1.1 million miners.
You'd be forgiven for mistaking the new SE with the previous one from 2020: They look identical. And while the letters SE stand for "Special Edition," they could easily mean the "Same Edition." That's not a dig at either phone -- the classic iPhone look is beloved by many. But keep in mind that in 2022, the SE's design traces back to 2014's iPhone 6 and is far from cutting-edge. Anyone looking for multiple rear cameras or minimal bezels won't find them here.
